Once I was back in my room and I'd canvassed the room for any sign of the baby vampire, I locked the door for all the good it would do me. I really needed a shower, and Sam could wait since she wouldn't notice my absence until tomorrow at the earliest.

The bathroom attached to the suite I had woken up in was as luxurious as the rest of the place. There were stone walls and a shower with a showerhead long and wide enough to make a cascade all the way across. It felt like standing under a waterfall, and the pounding jets were soothing to my aching muscles. Weirdly, the warm water made the heat under my skin feel less noticeable.

I leaned back against the wall and let out a deep breath. I couldn't believe anything that had happened recently. Alexander, the hybrid thing, take your pick. No matter how many times I woke up to this new reality, I remained convinced I was going to find out it was all a dream within a dream.

For the first time, I just wasn't sure I wanted that to be the case.

I couldn't get Alexander's words out of my head. Far more concerning was the effect they had exerted on my heart. And… other regions far more problematic, if I was being honest with myself.

Was I really this pathetic? The heat in my veins wasn't just physical anymore. I could feel it spilling out from my core, smoldering deeper like a hot brand through solid ice.

The immediate explanation that occurred to me was definitely the simplest, but that was impossible. There was no way I was going into heat. I wasn't supposed to be able to do that until the mark was complete--and until I had shifted for the first time.

But again, how many other she-wolves had actually been in my position? And I had never heard of an unfinished mark before, until it happened to me. Then there was the fact that I still didn't know what the other half of me was, so if it was heat–which seemed like the most benign option–there was no telling how it would affect me.

While my rational mind was going, more primal urges demanded to be met. I knew if I didn't take the edge off, I was going to be tempted to find Alexander and see just how much help he was willing to give me. If I was being honest with myself, that was tempting enough with or without the heat.

My hand traveled down the soft plane of my torso and I slid my soapy fingers across my slit. My clit throbbed with need as the simple touch turned a burning flame into an inferno. I hated myself for the fact that my host was the first thought in my fevered mind, but it was better than the alternative.
